7th Annual Mississauga Marathon presented by Canon still the Fastest Growing
Marathon in Canada

The 7th annual Mississauga Marathon presented by Canon continued to uphold its status as the "Fastest Growing Marathon in Canada," as we experienced an eleven percent increase over last year's numbers.

On race weekend  13, 484 registered participants took part in the Canon Marathon, Sure Gro Half Marathon, Desjardins General Insurance 10K & 10K Student Relay, "The Hazel" 5K, 2K Family Fun Run/Walk, and the Corporate/Team Relay.

An ever increasing trend in health and fitness among our youth sparked an increased interest in the MaraFun Program, with over 630 students from over fifteen different schools competing in the 2K Family Fun Run/Walk to complete their six week program, in which they complete the Full Marathon distance.  "The endless hours of preparation are all worth it when you see the excitement on the faces of thousands of runners crossing the finish line and the spectators cheering them on" commented Elliott Kerr, President of Landmark Sport Group.  "This was definitely a banner year for the event.  Everyone involved in this event should be aware that they had a hand in being part of people's dreams today. We owe a great deal of the success of this race to our corporate partners, our volunteers and a great group of runners."

"It's wonderful to see our youth getting excited about running and fitness," said Elliott Kerr, President of Landmark Sport Group.  "The excitement and sense of accomplishment you can see in the children's eyes when they are awarded their medal and certificate of completion is all that is needed to make all the effort we put into this event worthwhile."

Daniel Njenga broke the tape with a time of 2:20:36.5 to take the overall title of the Men's Canon Mississauga Marathon Champion, while Allison Hobeika had a time of 3:08:46.5 to earn her the title of the Women's Canon Mississauga Marathon Champion.

Philip Rotich and Lucas McAneney crossed the finish line in second and third respectfully in the men's category, while Julie Cummings and Daniela Fiumara earned their podium finishes in second and third for the women's category of the Canon Mississauga Marathon.

In addition to the record number of participants, this year's event also engaged record numbers of volunteers, with over 1,500 individuals donating their time and services to make help ensure the success of race weekend.

Crowds estimated at over 30,000 spectators lined the courses throughout each event over the weekend and also enjoyed the finish line festivities, that this year were held in Port Credit Memorial Park.

"The new finish line area was a huge success," explains Race Director, Brian Eastcott.  "Participants enjoyed finishing along the Credit River, spectators enjoyed the experience and  runners experienced the unique charm of downtown Port Credit, from the landmark lighthouse and boating to all the restaurants, pubs, flower shops, art galleries and more!."

The 8th annual Mississauga Marathon will take place May 14th and 15th, 2011.
